Akshay Kumar replaces Shahid Kapoor in Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster Soorarai Pottru.
The makers of the successful Tamil-language film Soorarai Pottru (2020) are set to produce bankroll the film in Hindi. And if reports are to be believed, they have roped in Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar to play the same role which Suriya essayed in the original. Just like the original, Suriya will also produce the remake along with Guneet Monga.
A source close to the development tells Bollywood Hungama, “It is a pan-India film and the story needs to be witnessed by everyone. Because the makers have the rights to the biopic, they have now planned to go big with Akshay Kumar on board. Yes, they narrated the story to Akshay again and he loved it. He has already given his verbal nod to the project and the team is waiting to lock in on the dates and other modalities.”
For the uninitiated, Shahid Kapoor was the original choice for the remake. But when the actor demanded a hefty remuneration, the makers decided to go ahead with another actor.
“Apparently, Shahid loved the film but asked for a ridiculous remuneration which did not work at all for the makers. After several attempts at convincing Shahid, they gave up when he refused to budge from his ₹30 crore (approximately: £ 2,903,203) plus fee and a certain profit share, as well. They have now decided to shoot with Akshay for a little over a month and wrap the shoot. Akshay, they feel, will have a bigger crowd pull and he is also a more bankable option,” adds the source.
All You Need To Know About Soorarai Pottru
Director: Sudha Kongara
Cast: Suriya, Aparna Balamurali, Paresh Rawal, Karunas and Vivek Prasanna
Soorarai Pottru was partly inspired by events from the life of Simplifly Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath. It traces the lesser-known story of the ace businessman.
Soorarai Pottru, which stars Suriya in one of his most rewarding performances in recent years, revolves around Nedumaaran Rajangam aka Maara (Suriya) and his dream – to introduce a low-cost airline that can make flying affordable for people of all the classes. At a time when flying was mostly restricted to the upper class and those with deep pockets, Maara nurtured the dream of making flying a reality for everyone. There’s a hard-hitting incident (which unfolds in an airport) that fuels Maara’s ambition to start a low-cost airline and it’s one of the most powerful scenes of the movie. The rest of the story is about how Maara holds onto his dream of making flying affordable and flies high but the journey isn’t as smooth as one can imagine.
Based on the life of Captain GR Gopinath of Air Deccan and his book Simply Fly, the film makes for a riveting watch. The story of Maara is made to look even more inspiring because of Suriya, who is phenomenal and holds the show together. Interestingly, the film isn’t just about Maara and his dream; it’s also about Bommi (Maara’s wife) and her dream to start a bakery. As the film progresses, we see Bommi (played by Aparna Balamurali) become a crucial part in Maara’s journey and the scenes between them leave a strong impact.
