Aftab Shivdasani Loses Rs 1.50 Lakh in Cyber Fraud
The incident occurred on a quiet Sunday, and it wasn’t until the following day that a case was officially registered with the Bandra police station. According to police reports, the message conveyed an alarming ultimatum – if Shivdasani failed to promptly update his KYC details, his bank account would be suspended. Fearing the potential consequences, Aftab unwittingly followed the instructions provided in the message.
To his shock and dismay, a subsequent message flashed on his screen, informing him that a whopping sum of Rs 1,49,999 had been debited from his account. Realizing that he had been duped, Shivdasani immediately contacted the bank’s branch manager for assistance. Acting upon the manager’s advice, he promptly filed a formal complaint with the police.
Law enforcement swiftly took action by registering a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), with a focus on Section 420, which pertains to cheating, and relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. An active investigation is now underway to track down the culprits responsible for this cybercrime.
